Subtitling and Dual-sound technology

Subtitling and dual-sound technology has also helped the channels reach out to a wider audience. According to a study conducted by MDA in 2013, 54.4% of the respondents said they would be more likely to watch local programmes if there were subtitles. Also, 40.1% of the respondents indicated that dual-sound would prompt them to watch more Mediacorp programmes.

Channel U now has subtitles in both Mandarin and English for its dramas, and also Chinese subtitles for its news. Especially since a bulk of its dramas is imported, having both Mandarin and English subtitles allow everyone to enjoy the programmes, and is not limited to ethnic Chinese.

In addition, the younger generation of Korean drama and Japanese drama viewers prefer watching these dramas in their original language instead of having it dubbed in Chinese. The introduction of dual-sound technology now allows the younger generation to view the dramas in the original language, while still catering to the older group of audience who prefers having the drama dubbed.

Digital/ HD TV

There has been a vast improvement in video and broadcast technology since the start of the stations. To keep up with the advancement and increased expectations of viewers, MediaCorp had also made a shift to broadcasting in HD. Broadcasting standards had changed, and Mediacorp is making a move towards being fully digital. Mediacorp digital TV uses the digital TV standard DVB-T2, an upgrade from the current DVB-T technology.

With the shift in broadcasting standards, the local audience can now enjoy higher quality pictures and superior sound.

Since December 2013, while all seven MediaCorp channels are broadcast in digital, four channels are also broadcast in HD – Channel 5, Channel 8, Suria and Vasantham. The remaining three: Channel NewsAsia, Channel U and okto will be upgraded to HD by 2016.

Online Social Platforms

With the increasing reliance on the Internet and social media to connect the world, MediaCorp had made a move to using social media like Facebook and Instagram to extend its reach to a greater audience.

Xinmsn was a collaboration between Mediacorp and Microsoft, established in 2010. MOBTV had merged with Xinmsn and a key feature was the catch-up TV. New episodes and dramas are available online on the catch-up TV within 24 hours of its broadcast, and this gives the audience who had missed the drama to watch it at their convenience.

Toggle.sg, was launched in 2013. It is a Mediacorp platform which provides viewing services and features local TV programmes from Suria, Channel U and others. Toggle was further extended to a Toggle Now app, allowing audience interaction while watching certain shows, such as its use in the voting process of Project Superstar 2014.

Online Viewing Channels

With the increasing reliance on the Internet, the way in which audience watch dramas and television has changed. In contrast to having their television viewing schedules restricted by the broadcaster's programming, the audience now have the option of watching their favourite drama serials at their convenience. Also, with the rise of video sharing and streaming sites like YouTube and Viikii, the audience is now given a wider range of shows to choose from.

In response to the changing habits of television viewing, MediaCorp had also moved to the Internet to allow the audience to be able to watch its productions at their convenience. The idea of Television on Demand and Catch-up TV allows audiences to watch their dramas at their convenience, and even before its broadcast on the terrestrial channels. Selected variety shows and dramas are also available online within 24 hours after its broadcast on Television.
